Many of these mailing lists went dormant or had static information, and in many cases the administration of the lists would end, leaving the pages and files as important resources and information.

On September 22nd, 2010, Google Groups announced that all updating to Google Groups pages and files would be halted in January 2011, and a download option would exist. After shutting down the service in January, the files and pages were fully deleted in February of 2011.

After months of effort, Archive Team was able to recover the pages and files related to all known Google Groups. Due to the number of group files and their relative small size, browsable .zip files of all the groups separated by the first two letters of the group name have been made available. In total, roughly one terabyte of user-generated content was rescued.
